About This Edition
This final volume of Edward Burrough’s collected writings is the most affecting of the seven. It gathers the writings from his last years — the period of his imprisonment in Newgate, where he was confined with hundreds of other Quakers in conditions of deliberate brutality. He wrote from prison with undiminished force until his strength finally failed. The letters to Friends from these years are among the most moving documents in Quaker history: a young man who knew he was dying, still urging his brothers and sisters to be faithful, still confident in the sufficiency of the Light.
Also included in this volume are the testimonies written by those who knew Burrough and witnessed his death in 1663. George Fox, Francis Howgill, and others set down their recollections of a man they had loved and depended upon. These testimonies serve as both biography and memorial — and as an implicit challenge to every reader: what would it look like to live, and to die, with this quality of faithfulness?
