Born in Lancashire, England. As a boy he came to live at Swarthmore Hall, the household of Judge Thomas Fell and Margaret Fell.
At age sixteen, Caton was convinced by George Fox's ministry at Swarthmore Hall, becoming one of the youngest members of the first generation of Friends.
Traveled to the Netherlands to preach the Quaker message, becoming one of the first Friends to carry the movement to the European continent.
Made repeated journeys to Holland and other parts of the Continent, establishing Quaker meetings among Dutch and German-speaking peoples.
Died at only twenty-nine years of age, his short life spent almost entirely in missionary service. His journal was preserved and later published.
Raised at Swarthmore Hall under Margaret Fell's care, Caton was shaped by her household and sent out from it into missionary service.
Convinced by Fox at Swarthmore Hall at age sixteen, Caton carried the founder's message to the European continent.
